🏀 Why Everyone Hates Patrick Beverley: The NBA's Most Annoying Pest

Patrick Beverley is not the most talented player in the NBA. He is not the most athletic, the most skilled, or the most decorated. What Patrick Beverley is, without question, is the most annoying player in professional basketball. He has built an entire career on getting under people's skin, and he is disturbingly good at it.

The Villain Resume

Beverley's rap sheet is long and loud. His most infamous moment came in the 2013 playoffs when he dove at Russell Westbrook's knee during a dead-ball situation, tearing Westbrook's meniscus and derailing OKC's championship window. Westbrook has never forgiven him, and neither have Thunder fans. That single play defines Beverley's legacy more than any stat line ever could.

But the Westbrook injury was just the beginning. Beverley has been involved in confrontations with nearly every star in the league. He once shoved Chris Paul from behind during a timeout, earning a suspension. He has been ejected for taunting, for excessive contact, and for generally being a nuisance that referees could no longer ignore.

During the 2021 playoffs with the Clippers, Beverley shoved Suns guard Chris Paul in the back as Paul was celebrating a series-clinching victory. It was petty, unnecessary, and perfectly on-brand. The NBA suspended him one game for the incident, but the damage to his reputation was already done.

The Championship Parade Incident

When the Timberwolves qualified for the playoffs in 2022, Beverley celebrated as though he had won the NBA Finals. He ran around the court, jumped on the scorer's table, and generally acted like qualifying for the postseason was the greatest achievement in basketball history. For a player who has never won anything meaningful, the over-the-top celebration rubbed fans and analysts the wrong way.

His brief stint with the Lakers in 2022-23 was a disaster. He was brought in to provide toughness and defense alongside LeBron James, but the team imploded. When things went south, Beverley threw a ball into the stands at a fan, earning a three-game suspension. He was traded mid-season.

The Defense

To be fair to Beverley, his path to the NBA was genuinely inspiring. He went undrafted in 2009, spent years playing overseas in Ukraine and Russia, and clawed his way into the league through sheer determination. He does not have the talent of the stars he guards, so he compensates with effort, energy, and aggression. His defensive intensity has made him a valuable role player for over a decade.

Beverley would also argue that his job is to get into opponents' heads, and he does that better than almost anyone. The fact that superstars get visibly frustrated by a player who averages eight points per game is, in its own way, a testament to his effectiveness.

The Verdict

Patrick Beverley is the NBA's version of a mosquito — small, persistent, and impossible to ignore. He will never be a Hall of Famer, but he has carved out a unique niche as the player everyone loves to hate. His antics cross the line from competitive to reckless far too often, and the Westbrook injury is a permanent stain on his legacy. But Beverley does not care about your opinion of him, and that indifference is precisely what makes him so infuriating.
